How to get your cut of PlayStation's 7.85 million settlement
Sony will deposit PlayStation Store credit straight into eligible US PlayStation Network accounts to satisfy a 7.85 million antitrust settlement, and many will be happy to learn that there's no claim form to fill in. Anyone who bought a qualifying digital game between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, was enrolled automatically, according to the official settlement website. However, no money can change hands until Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the US District Court for the Northern District of California grants final approval at a fairness hearing in October. Don't mark your calendar and start building a wishlist just yet, though, because more than 4.4 million eligible accounts have been identified. That means once legal fees come out of the fund, the typical share will work out to a less-than-princely sum of a dollar or two in store credit per eligible purchase. If approved, the deal will settle a PlayStation Store class action lawsuit under the Sherman Act, first filed way back in May 2021 over Sony's decision to stop letting retailers like Amazon and GameStop (other outlets are available) sell download codes for PlayStation games.
Astro's Playroom review – a brilliantly playful showcase for the PlayStation 5
Because I grew up playing video games in the late 90s and early 00s, the rhythms of the 3D platformer are as instinctive to me as breathing. Put me in front of Fortnite and I'm all thumbs – how can these kids think about building and shooting things at the same time!? – but I can run, jump, collect things and bash baddies with superhuman speed and efficiency. I've had its signature tune playing in my head nonstop for the past week, like that unfortunate month around Christmas 1997 when all my thoughts were soundtracked by the Frosty Village theme from Diddy Kong Racing. Astro's Playroom imagines that your brand new PlayStation 5 has little chibi robots living inside it. The game comes with the console, and it's designed as a showcase for its new capabilities and for the DualSense controller, which has fancy rumble feedback and adaptive triggers in addition to the touchpad and mini speaker of the PlayStation 4's controller.
The PlayStation Reinforcement Learning Environment (PSXLE)
Purves, Carlos, Cangea, Cătălina, Veličković, Petar
We propose a new benchmark environment for evaluating Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms: the PlayStation Learning Environment (PSXLE), a PlayStation emulator modified to expose a simple control API that enables rich game-state representations. We argue that the PlayStation serves as a suitable progression for agent evaluation and propose a framework for such an evaluation. We build an action-driven abstraction for a PlayStation game with support for the OpenAI Gym interface and demonstrate its use by running OpenAI Baselines.
